"On
The Fast Track," the follow up to my Love
Letters CD is now completed. It's a collection
of songs that I believe are very upbeat,
inspiring and most of all, soulful. It features
my playing in a way that people who have seen me
perform live are accustomed to - spontaneous and
passionate. I've also tried to capture the
energy of my band and put it in 60 minutes of
recorded music. I'm very fortunate to have a
band that, for the most part, has been with me
since I've been recording as a leader on Heads
Up. In those nine years we've been able to
develop a rapport off and on the bandstand.
That
kind of relationship makes playing music
together so natural that it looks deceptively
easy. One thing that I learned from Grover
Washington Jr., however, is to never
underestimate the musical and emotional
complexity in a piece of music. I've learned to
respect the work of other musicians enough to
give a song a chance to grow on me. Like an
onion, a good recording reveals layer after
layer. The more you listen to it, the more you
find in it.
I
hope that listeners will take a few moments to
lose themselves in the many layers of "On
the Fast Track". In it they'll find
elements inspired by contemporary city life: the
hustle, bustle of downtown, the unwinding with
family or a loved one after work, the
electricity of city night life, and the stealing
of some time alone to recharge before doing it
all over again. In my view, it's a story set to
music that reflects the contemporary challenge
of keeping your footing in a fast moving world.
